Media Statement PHUTHADITJHABA – A bitter ex-boyfriend was sentenced for kidnapping, robbery, rape and theft from his ex-girlfriend. On Monday, 07 March 2022 at about 12:00, the 28-year-old victim was at work when her ex-boyfriend called her, demanding to speak to her. She went out and met with her ex-boyfriend, who threatened her with a firearm, demanding that she cancel the protection order against him or else he would kill her. The victim refused and the suspect, at gunpoint, forced the victim to her mother’s place in Phuthadithaba. On arrival, they found the victim’s mother sitting outside. They both went into the house as if they were going to have a chat. While inside the house, the suspect demanded the keys to her brother’s bakkie parked outside and pushed her to her brother’s bedroom. While in her brother’s bedroom, the suspect saw a safe and instructed the victim to give him keys to the safe. He ransacked the room until he found the keys and took out a firearm from the safe. He instructed the victim to go with him to the next bedroom, where he raped her at gunpoint. After the ordeal, the suspect, still at gunpoint, ordered the victim to give him money so they could both take a hike to Bethlehem to visit his cousins. On arrival in Bethlehem, the suspect stole his cousin’s vehicle and drove to Thaba Bosiu, where it ran out of petrol near the mountains. He called the victim’s brother for petrol and the police were made aware of the incident. Tseki police arrived in Thaba Bosiu and the suspect was disarmed of both firearms and arrested. The case was investigated by Sergeant Tumi Moletsane of the Phuthaditjhaba Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit under the guidance of NPA Prosecutor Me Didimalang Sebogo. He was found guilty of kidnapping, robbery of cash, theft of a firearm, rape and contravention of a protection order. The 28-year-old suspect, Mpho Mofokeng, was sentenced by Phuthaditjhaba Regional Court to 27 years’ direct imprisonment. Ends
