It’s super frustrating when your SASSA grant has not been paid in time. We are inundated with messages on The South African WhatsApp line about this very topic each month. And we can assure you if your SASSA grant has not been paid, don’t worry, you are not alone. This problem appears to be most prevalent with the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant disbursed by the South African Social Security Agency.
Because roughly 18 million of Mzansi’s 28-million social grant recipients get the R370 monthly SRD stipend. As it is the most common, it is also the most likely not to be paid on time. It’s far less common to see our 4-million SASSA old-age pensions and 13-million SASSA child support grants not paid in time each month.
WHY MY SASSA GRANT HAS NOT BEEN PAID
Most often when a SASSA grant has not been paid, the number one reason is missing or incorrect banking details, reports SASSA Grant Status Check. Here’s more:
1. BANK DETAILS
The agency says most often when a SASSA grant has not been paid it’s because the provided bank details have failed SASSA’s bank-account verification test done by the National Treasury. Another bank-related reason is you may have selected cash send payments and are therefore waiting for a bank transfer that’s not coming. Login to the SASSA web portal to check and confirm your banking details. And, remember, the bank account must be in your name.
2. TECHNICAL ISSUES
The agency gets double the number of applications for SASSA SRD grants than it actually approves. That means upwards of 36-million applications it must work through. As a result, technical glitches are common and understandable. If your SASSA grant has not been paid, a good chance is there’s been an IT issue. So, report it as soon as possible to find out if their systems are indeed down.
3. FAILED MEANS TEST
If the first two don’t apply to you, the next most common reason is because you’ve failed the SASSA means and/or asset test. In light of this test the government does not believe you’re worthy of the monthly grant, because you already have enough income.
4. CONTACT DETAILS
Although uncommon, if any of your personal or contact details are incorrect, that could be the reason your SASSA grant has not been paid. Double check and make sure you keep the agency up to date of any changes in your personal life.
5. VERIFICATION ISSUES
It can be frustrating but sometimes SASSA requires you to verify details via your registered phone number. If your SASSA grant has not been paid, double check that SASSA has not sent you a notification that you need to verify and somehow missed.
Moreover, we live in an information age. So, if your SASSA grant has not been paid and you can’t figure out why, you must contact the agency:
- Contact the SASSA helpline: 0800 601 011
- WhatsApp SASSA on: 082 046 8553
- You can even call the Presidential Hotline at 17737
- Or email him at: president@presidency.gov.za
