Media Statement BLOEMFONTEIN – A Sergeant working at Parkweg in the clearance office was arrested for alleged corruption. The arrest follows after the victim came forward with information that he allegedly met the 39-year-old Sergeant during 2023 when he started the expungement process to get his criminal record removed from his name. It is alleged that the victim went to Parkroad SAPS and paid an amount of R80 and R170 at the finance office and received official receipts. Later, he received a call from a sergeant requesting an added amount to speed up the process for his application. The complainant handed over the amount to the sergeant and did not receive a receipt. On 05 April 2024, the victim went to Parkroad SAPS to check the progress on his application and met with the Sergeant again and was told to come back on Monday, 08 April 2024 with another amount. The victim was unhappy, and he enquired about the many payments he was required to make. The case was referred to the Free State SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit and the suspect was arrested for corruption. He will appear before Bloemfontein Magistrate Court on Wednesday, 10 April 2024. The public is urged to ensure that they receive an invoice clearly stating the amount paid for services from the finance office. Know that if you make a payment to any official and you do not receive an official invoice, you might have fallen prey to corruption. Anyone who suspects corruption among police officials is requested to contact Warrant Officer Kobus Palm of the Free State SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit on 083 443 7837, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit an anonymous tip-off through the MySAPS App. Ends
