KIMBERLEY – Strengthened children rights and increased investigative capacity of the police ensured the conviction of 27-year-old Romeo Van Wyk and 26-year-old Bianca Neels by the Carnavon Regional Court on Friday, 05 April 2024. Romeo the accused had an argument with his girlfriend on Saturday, 09 September 2023 that led him to physically assaulting her and their 2-year-old child who was thrown against a wall by the accused. The Court imposed a 6 year prison sentence which is wholly suspended for 5 years on condition that he does not commit any related offence during the suspension period. In an unrelated case, Bianca Neels the accused assaulted her 4-year-old son on Monday, 21 August 2023 and was charged with attempted murder by the police due to the injuries inflicted. The accused was sentenced to 5 years direct imprisonment. Both accused names were recorded in the National Register for child protection and were declared unfit to possess a firearm. The Acting Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga, applauded the Carnavon FCS Unit’s investigating officers, Detective Sergeant Ayanda Phillips and Detective Constable Leverne Raaf for the sterling investigations that ensured that the perpetrators are brought to book.
He reiterated that the police will continue to invest in family values through the social crime prevention programmes with communities.
