GAUTENG – From Friday 29 March to Sunday 31 March 2024, members from the South African Police Service Gauteng Water Policing and Diving Services took part in Easter holiday operations. Members were deployed on a daily basis at Bronkhorstpruit Dam, Roodeplaat Dam as well as Vaal Dam and River while being on standby for any incidents that could occur across Gauteng. Their duties comprised vehicle patrols, vessel patrols on the waters, vessel inspections and checks, resort visits and removal of any illegal items or fishing nets. Friday evening saw members called to a scene in Ratanda where children were swimming in the Blesbokspruit River and one tragically drowned. The 15-year-old victim was recovered by divers at a depth of around three metres. On Saturday afternoon, an angler spotted a body part at Klip River, Vereeniging. Members responding to the scene recovered a leg and foot with a shoe on. A thorough search did not lead to the recovery of any other body parts and investigation is under way. The inherent dangers of rivers and dams demand continued attention. The Water Police continue with the campaign to make the public aware so as we can avoid unnecessary tragedies and thank our communities for their support in heeding these warnings. Individuals intending to traverse rivers are urged to do so exclusively at dedicated bridges, as accidents often stem from victims being swept away by rapid currents. Those engaging in baptism rituals should be cognisant of associated risks, considering the potential contamination of Gauteng Rivers like Klip River and Juksei with sewage and chemicals, posing health hazards. Precautionary measures are emphasized to avert needless loss of life. Individuals venturing onto dams, rivers, or waters for any activity are advised to do so only with a life jacket. Parents of young children near open waters should educate them about the associated dangers and ensure constant supervision.
Witnesses to water-related incidents on dams or rivers are urged to provide multiple landmarks to pinpoint locations for immediate search and rescue efforts. Heightened awareness is crucial to mitigate accidents at all times. The public are once again reminded that fishing with nets is illegal and constitutes a criminal offence as nets were once again removed during this weekend. operations.
