KIMBERLEY – The SAPS Northern Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga and his management welcomes the 15 years prison sentence handed down by the Kathu Regional Court to 27-year-old Piet “Papawe” Olyn following the gang rape of a 24-year-old female victim in Deben on Saturday, 19 June 2021. The Court heard that the victim was sleeping in her room when she felt someone who was on top of her and noticed that it was Piet Olyn who was raping her. She pushed him away and saw that there was another person known to her in the room telling the accused that he is done with his turn whilst zipping his trouser. The victim related her ordeal to her aunt and reported the matter to the police. Both suspect were arrested and charged with the alleged rape of the victim and the accused accomplice unfortunately passed away before the finalisation of the Court case. The accused, Piet Olyn was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for rape and his name will be entered into the National Register for Sex offenders and was declared unfit to possess a firearm. Major General Ngubelanga praised the Investigating Officer, Detective Constable John Belle for the thorough investigative work of the case. The police will remain relentless in ensuring that justice is served for victims of GBVF.
