POLOKWANE – The diligent efforts of the Multidisciplinary Forces, operating under the auspices of Operation Vala Umgodi, have resulted in the successful apprehension of four male suspects, aged between 26 and 46, for unlawful possession of firearms, ammunition, and robbery during the Easter Weekend. On Sunday, 31 March 2024, at about 12:00 midday, a collaborative operation led by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) was conducted at a meticulously planned Vehicle Check Point in Selwane village, just outside Phalaborwa, within the Mopani District. It was during this operation that a 42-year-old male suspect was apprehended for possession of unlawful firearm, accompanied by seven live rounds of ammunition. Noteworthy is the discovery that the firearm in question bore a tampered serial number and was found within the suspect’s BMW X5 vehicle. In a separate incident, occurring in the Vhembe District on Friday, 29 March 2024, at the early hour of 04:00, the law enforcement officers swiftly responded to a distress call regarding a robbery and theft of a firearm. As a result of the rapid and coordinated efforts of the Multidisciplinary Forces, a 26-year-old male suspect was promptly located and arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm, in addition to a single live round of ammunition. Moreover, on Friday 29 March 2024, two male suspects aged 30 and 46 years were arrested at Vuwani for attempted murder and robbery that occurred on the 28 March 2024 where the victim was robbed of a firearm and cellphone. The suspects will appear before the various Magistrate’s Courts on Tuesday, 2 April 2024.
