Media Statement NELSPRUIT – Sanele Richard Nyathi (49) was reportedly caught by the law enforcement agencies whilst engaged in alleged mining activities in Ogies in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 26 March 2024. According to information, the suspect was spotted by security guards at a certain mining premises. Police in Ogies were alerted by the security personnel about illegal mining activities being carried out. Upon Police arrival at the scene at about 03h00 am, it is alleged that the suspect was found operating the excavator on the mining site. Preliminary investigation indicates that the accused was somehow collaborating with others in these activities. Subsequent to his arrest, he then appeared at the Ogies Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Wednesday 27 March 2024, where he was remanded in custody for a formal bail application scheduled for Wednesday, 03 April 2024 The case docket was handed to the team of Detectives attached to Operation Vala Umgodi, and the excavator was seized for further investigation. The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has welcomed the arrest. The General further warned community members to refrain from illegal mining activities and if they fail to do so, they will face the full might of the law. Ends
