Media Statement ZWELITSHA – In the relentless pursuit of public safety and combating crime, the East London K9 and Flying Squad units have once again demonstrated their unwavering commitment and exceptional capabilities. Through their diligent efforts and relentless determination, these two units have successfully confiscated illicit drugs and recovered stolen vehicles this past week in separate incidents. On Wednesday, 27 March 2024 at about 02:30, East London K9 Unit members were patrolling along the N2 near Gonubie when they spotted a vehicle, travelling towards Gonubie. The members stopped the vehicle and on searching it, two large sport bags containing dagga were found. One of the four occupants, aged 26, admitted that the dagga belonged to him and he was arrested on a charge of illegal possession of dagga. The dagga weighed 29.65 kg’s and is estimated to be R180 000. At about 04:00, the same morning, the same members from East London K9 Unit, were patrolling in the Beacon Bay area when they were informed of a suspicious vehicle speeding along the Northeast Expressway at a very high speed. After a high speed chase, the driver of the white VW Polo eventually stopped the vehicle. On searching the vehicle, 10 bags of dagga weighing 59 kilograms were found. The 29 year old suspect was arrested on a charge of illegal possession of dagga. The estimated value of the dagga is R250 000. The outstanding performance of the East London Flying Squad highlights the vital role of this unit in safeguarding our neighbourhoods and their properties. In a space of two days, five stolen vehicles were recovered. On 25 March 2024, A VW Jetta was taken in a house robbery in Baysville. The vehicle was recovered on the N6 close to Ducats. Also, on the 25 March 2024, a VW Polo was stolen in Ggeberha and the members recovered the vehicle in Bongweni location. On 25 March 2024, the complainant was at a doctor’s surgery in Selbourne when she was robbed and her vehicle, a Cherry Tiggo 4Pro was taken. The vehicle was found abandoned on 26 March 2024in the Amalinda area. On 24 March 2024, the complainant was robbed at gunpoint at his residence at Silatsha in Mooilplaas and his Toyota Corolla was taken. The vehicle was found abandoned in Duncan Village. On 26 March 2024, a courier van was hijacked and robbed of its goods in Scenery Park. It was alleged that the goods were loaded into a white Kia Sonnet. The vehicle was recovered in Scenery Park. Buffalo City Metro Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Christopher Wright applauded the excellent work of the East London K9 and Flying Squad Units. ‘Their tireless dedication, impeccable performance of duty, and coordinated teamwork have been instrumental in removing drugs from our streets and returning stolen property to their rightful owners.
