Media Statement FREE STATE – A 51-year-old man, Sakyi Samuel, was found guilty and sentenced by the Bloemfontein Regional Court on Monday, 25 March 2024, for illegal possession of abalone (perlemoen). Members of Kopanong SAPS, Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Bloemfontein Serious Organised Crime Investigation executed a search warrant at a house in Bayswater, Bloemfontein on 18 May 2023. Gas cylinders, buckets, fans, a scale, and other equipment used for processing abalone were found on the premises. Abalone with an estimated value of R314 755 was seized and the suspect arrested. Free State Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Major General Mokgadi Bokaba has applauded all members involved for their swift response. Ghanaian Sakyi Samuel was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment or a fine of R60 000. Ends
