NELSPRUIT – The astute members from Crime Prevention in Vosman SAPS have recovered a reportedly hijacked vehicle shortly after it was forcefully taken from its rightful owner. This incident happened at Hlalanikahle in Vosman on Wednesday, 20 March 2024. According to the victim, he informed the Police that after knocking off from duty, he drove home in a Toyota GD6 bakkie. Upon arrival at home, it is said that he alighted with a view to open both the gate as well as the garage door. After doing so, he returned to the vehicle, and it was during this time when he was approached by three men at gunpoint. These suspects allegedly searched him and took his wallet as well as a cell phone. As soon as the suspects were done, it is said that they fled the scene using the hijacked vehicle and there were no reports of shots being fired during the said incident. The matter was immediately reported to the Police working in the Community Service Centre. Those members shared the information with other members working at Crime Prevention. The astute members responded swiftly to the complaint and recovered the vehicle which was found abandoned in the bushes in Kroomdraai. It is possible that the suspects might have either left the car to “cool off” or were still checking the coast. The success was scooped through the assistance of technical support, which dedicated members applied.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has commended members of the Police for their quick response as well as the means of technical support which made it possible for the vehicle to be quickly recovered before it went far. “We vow to work tirelessly in dealing with carjackings and theft of motor vehicles. There is a need to collaborate with the community members as well as other law enforcement agencies with a sole purpose of responding promptly to safety and security objectives enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa,” said the General.
