EASTERN CAPE – Acting Provincial Head of the Hawks, Brigadier Vennessa Hastings, commended the collaborative efforts of the Gqeberha-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation (SCCI) team of the Hawks, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the South African Revenue Services (SARS) in bringing Aubrey Mokgobi Moeng (45), an Accountant of Consult Three Architects (Pty) Ltd before the Gqeberha New Law Court on 18 March 2024 on charges related to fraud. Moeng was arrested on the same day and was subsequently released on R5000 bail. It is alleged that between November 2015 and July 2021, Moeng submitted fraudulent tax returns to SARS on behalf of his business entity with the purported aim of defrauding the revenue service. The investigation uncovered discrepancies in the returns and the matter was ultimately reported to Gqeberha SCCI of the Hawks for further probing. Investigation revealed that despite Moeng having received over R3 million based on these false submissions. The Hawks investigation further expose potential prejudice to SARS totalling over R8.2 million.
Moeng appeared in court on 18 March 2024 and was granted bail. The case has been remanded until 2 May 2024 for further proceedings including the arrest of four (4) additional suspects.
