Media Statement ZWELITSHA – In a display of swift and effective policing, police members in three districts, namely Chris Hani, Joe Gqabi and OR Tambo executed multiple operations resulting in the confiscation of nine firearms in separate incidents between 26 and 28 February 2024. The coordinated efforts highlighted the dedication of police members in curbing the proliferation of illegal firearms, which often fuel violent crimes in communities. On Tuesday 27 February 2024 at about 22:00, the Tactical Response Team in Chris Hani district executed search warrants at three houses in the Mhlophekazi Administrative area while following up on information on illegal firearms. Three suspects aged between 28 and 58 were arrested on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Three firearms with ammunition were confiscated. In the Joe Gqabo district, on 27 February 2024 at about 15:00, Public Order Policing in Lusikisiki, arrested a 25-year-old suspect in Maclear in possession of an unlicensed firearm. The suspect was arrested after members followed up on information and found the suspect at Mrwabo Locality. He was in possession of an Uzi rifle (serial number erased). He was detained on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm. Excellent collaboration between the Tactical Response Team and Crime Intelligence working in Majola in the Port St Johns area resulted in the apprehension of a 45-year-old man and the seizure of four home-made shotguns on Monday 26 February 2024 at Tyityane locality. Also, during the early hours of 28 February 2024 at about 01:00, the OR Tambo District Task Team acted on intelligence received and arrested, a 40-year-old suspect for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at Mthatha Slovo Park, in the Maholweni area. A 9X19mm BXP machine gun with an erased serial number was found with fifteen live rounds of ammunition. He was detained on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition. Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene welcomed the arrests and confiscations and added that, ‘each confiscated firearm represented a potential threat diffused, as suspects involved in the illegal possession were arrested. The significance of these seizures cannot be overstated, as firearms continue to play a significant role in perpetuating crimes across the Province. By swiftly responding to intelligence and engaging in proactive measures, the police demonstrated their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the communities they serve.’ Ends
