EASTERN CAPE – In a proactive effort to tackle the alarming issue of underage drinking and its associated risks, police have teamed up with key stakeholders, in a ground breaking joint venture. This initiative aimed to safeguard the well-being of young children who are often found in taverns, engaging in risky behaviours alongside older individuals. On Thursday, 14 March 2024, the education campaign was held at the Mthatha Skills Centre school at Ikhwezi township. By bringing together various sectors of the community, such as the SAPS, Security Services, Department of Education and the Eastern Cape Liquor Board, this joint venture fostered a holistic approach to address the root causes of underage drinking. All speakers echoed the same sentiments that through intervening early and providing support services, we can prevent the escalation of crimes such as rape, teenage pregnancy and murder, which tragically affect young lives. A local school principal shared his experiences where learners would bring liquor and drugs into school premises but with the close relationship that the school shares with the police, incidents of such nature are handled swiftly. The security services also narrated situations where they found drunk children around Ngangelizwe and Kwezi townships in the early hours of the morning and are exposed to all forms of abuse. The Department of Education speaker appealed to young children to concentrate on their education and strive towards making a better life for themselves and urged them to involve themselves in various school projects to keep themselves busy and to stay away from been on the wrong side of the law. Eastern Cape Liquor Board project co-ordinator emphasized the need to work tirelessly with the police and to frequently check compliance by taverns as well as to make sure that young children are not in taverns. The SAPS explained the roles and responsibility encumbered on law enforcement when children are in conflict with the law. Parents were singled out and warned of their obligations in ensuring that their children are nurtured in the right direction. The informative session concluded with all role-players pledging, ‘that through education, enforcement, and community engagement, together we can create a safer environment for our youth.’
As we continue to prioritize the well-being of our youth, initiatives like this joint venture highlight the power of community collaboration in addressing complex social issues. The success of this initiative serves as a model for other communities facing similar challenges across the province.
