MPUMALANGA – Lukhanyo Mzilikazi (30), driver and Qiniso Mkhize (46) crew, were found guilty and sentenced by the Barberton Regional Court for possession of copper cables. On 08 May 2023, information was received regarding a white Toyota Quantum, towing a trailer that was transporting copper cables along R40 road towards Ehlanzeni district. The said vehicle was monitored through surveillance and followed by crime intelligence and the Hawks Nelspruit based Serious Organised Crime Investigation, in conjunction with Crime Combined Private Investigations, Provincial traffic department and Hi-Tech security. The said vehicle was spotted, stopped and searched at R38 Badplaas road turn off. The driver of the vehicle introduced himself as Lukhanyo Mzilikazi and his crew as Qiniso Mkhize, both from Vryheid in KwaZulu Natal. During the search of the vehicle, copper cables were found hidden in a special compartment in the trailer. Both accused were immediately arrested for possession of copper cables and detained. The vehicle, trailer, cables and cell phones were seized, taken to Barberton SAPS and registered as exhibits. Both accused appeared before court on several occasions until investigation was finalised. Mzilikazi and Mkhize were found guilty and sentenced by the Barberton Regional Court on Thursday, 14 March 2024 as follows: Each was fine R20 000.00 or 6 years imprisonment. In addition, each is sentenced to 8 years imprisonment which is suspended for 5 years on condition that the accused are not convicted of theft during the period of suspension. Both accused were further declared unfit to possess firearms.
The Provincial Head of the Hawks Major General Gerber applauded the collaboration of the multidisciplinary team and the prosecution authority. The sentence will serve as deterrent to other would be thieves.
