Media Statement HLANGANANI – The South African Police Service in Hlanganani in Mopani district held Safer Schools awareness campaign on Wednesday, 13 March 2024, in Msengi High School in Nwamatatane village and NwaMalobye High School, Tiyani village respectively. MEC of Depatment of Education, Mme Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya led the campaign accompanied by the Acting Mayor of Collins Chabane Municipality Cllr Lebea and Local ward councillor Cllr Bamuza The SAPS entourage was led by the Acting District Commander Brigadier Marry Mashila acompanied by Hlanganani SAPS Acting Station commander Captain Mabatha, Hlanganani SAPS VISPOL commander Captain Sithole, Hlanganani VISPOL members, Mopani district K9 and Mopani district First responders. The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, Liberty life, and MTN foundation were also in attendance. The back to school campaign commenced with search on the school premises and learners, which resulted in the confiscation of a knife, dagga, and clothing items that do not form part of the school uniforms. After the searches, Brigadier Marry Mashila addressed a cumulative number of 1523 learners on the following topics: · Gender based violence · Liquor, drugs, and other substance abuse · Illegal gambling · Teenage pregnancy · Bullying · Risk of hitchhiking · Juvenile prison · The importance of education The best academic achievers were awarded with digital tablets and table lamps for studying during load shedding and schoolbags. All the female learners received sanitary towels. The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, in partnership with MTN foundation and Liberty life, donated sporting equipment such as javelins, shotput, etc. The school principals of both schools appreciated the partnership with the police which ensures safety and discipline in the schools.
