FREE STATE: A 45-year-old woman is scheduled to make a first appearance in the Welkom Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 11 March 2024 on allegations of corruption. She was arrested on 8 March 2024 during a Hawks operation held in Welkom. In February 2024, Matjhabeng Local Municipality invited the public to apply for vacancies as trainee traffic officers. A 20-year-old job seeker was ecstatic when she received a call from a woman who confirmed receipt of her application. The caller promised to appoint her on condition that she paid R10 000. The matter was reported to Welkom’s Serious Corruption Investigation. On 8 March at about 8:00 when the suspect thought it was her time to collect the R10 000, she found the detectives waiting. She was immediately arrested. It has been verified that the suspect is not an employee of the municipality.
Acting Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Brigadier Sophie Hange would like to thank residents of Welkom for exposing the scam. “Part of our investigation is to establish who the suspect could have been working with and the extent thereof. Government jobs are not for sale. Anyone who tries to solicit money in this manner must be reported,” she said.
