EIGHT TIMES MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL FAMILY BROKE PROTOCOL
With the eyes of the world on them at all times, members of the royal family cannot step out of line, ever.
However, there are always exceptions, and these royals are fearless in bending and even breaking royal protocol.
Here is what we know.
MEGHAN MARKLE
When the Duchess of Sussex married Prince Harry, Meghan Markle decided to break tradition and served her wedding guests a sponge cake drizzled with elderflower and lemon, People reports.
According to The Sun, it is a royal tradition to serve fruitcake at major celebrations. Queen Victoria reportedly first served fruit cake on a special occasion in 1840.
QUEEN CAMILLA
Avid royal fans will know that members of the royal family do not go to the hospital, not even to escort or visit loved ones. Queen Camilla recently broke protocol when she visited King Charles III at the hospital for his recent surgery, Town&Country reports.
The late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip always went to hospital alone.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Apart from public displays of emotion, according to The Sun, there is no bigger no-no than public displays of affection. While visiting Buckingham Palace as part of the G20 Summit in 2009, Michelle Obama shocked the world when she put her arm around the late Queen Elizabeth. Although hesitant at first, the former monarch reciprocated the hug, The Guardian reports.
Another time the queen threw caution to the wind was when she attended the funeral of her head housekeeper, Anette Wilkin, Hello! Magazine reports. It is reportedly not protocol for royals to attend funerals of staff members.
KING CHARLES III
Members of the royal family are not allowed to hand out autographs. According to Glamour UK, this is because of the security risk of fraud. King Charles III, however, did not let this ban stop him. When visiting a family who lost their home in a flood, he asked for a piece of paper and “shakily” gave them his autograph, MailOnline reports.
Another big no-no in the royal family is shellfish. According to Marie Claire, royal staff and members of the royal family avoid eating it because of the risk of food poisoning. King Charles, however, has been known for his love of fresh oysters and regularly indulges.
KATE MIDDLETON
Just like with autographs, royal family members tend to avoid selfies with fans. According to royal commentator Victoria Arbiter, this is because “if you grant one, then it quickly becomes overwhelming… From a security standpoint, they’re also not ideal as they warrant a certain closeness,” she tells BusinessInsider.
The Sun reports that while in Wales at the Dowlais Rugby Club last year, the Princess of Wales stopped to meet the crowds outside and even posed for the occasional selfie.
PRINCE GEORGE
Young boys in the royal family are known for wearing shorts to formal occasions until age eight. For Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding, Prince George wore custom Dege & Skinner pants. His outfit matched Prince William and Prince Harry’s on the big day, Harper’s Bazaar reports.
