We were alerted to the fact that many social grant recipients are still unaware of what’s happening to their expiring SASSA cards for 2024, based on the sheer number of questions we receive on our WhatsApp line.
EXPIRING SASSA CARDS FOR 2024
According to Community Express News, following a recent announcement by Postbank, you can continue to use your existing SASSA card in 2024. Initially, it was communicated by the South African Social Security Agency that card holders would have to renew their SASSA cards before 31 December 2023.

However, in an about-face or a moment of disorganisation on the part of SASSA, it is advised that you continue using your current card for transactions until further notice. This was after it was understood that SASSA gold cards would be replaced with black ones for 2024. Nevertheless, the expiry date listed no longer applies, and the cards are valid until further word from the government.
NO NEED TO CHANGE A THING
Dr Bongani Diako from Postbank said expiring SASSA cards for 2024 that would stay in circulation and this was a good thing for the needy in South Africa. “Millions of social grant beneficiaries do not have to change their expiring SASSA cards for 2024, guaranteeing grant beneficiaries they will be able to access their money.”

There have been plenty of misleading reports and even scams regarding the status of expiring SASSA cards for 2024. However, Diako reminds everyone that Postbank is the only bank mandated to replace SASSA cards. “These gold cards, despite the expiry date, will be valid after 31 December 2023 and beneficiaries may continue to use them as normal,” concluded Diako.
POSTBANK AND SELECT RETAILERS
A reminder that grant recipients can use their SASSA cards to withdraw money from a wide network of ATMs in South Africa. Likewise, retailers such as Boxer, Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Usave and Spar are also withdrawal points. There is even a SASSA Moya mobile app for your smartphone you may want to explore.

- Older Persons Grants: Wednesday 3 January 2024.
- Disability Grants: Thursday 4 January 2024.
- Children’s Grants: Friday 5 January 2024.
FEBRUARY 2024

- Disability Grants: Monday 5 February 2024.
- Children’s Grants: Tuesday 6 February 2024.
MARCH 2024
- Older Persons Grants: Tuesday 5 March 2024.
- Disability Grants: Wednesday 6 March 2024.
- Children’s Grants: Thursday 7 February 2024.
*The social security agency reminds beneficiaries that payments may take 2-3 days to reflect.
