High-rise buildings also known as skyscrapers can be major attractions that define cities and draw the attention of visitors because of the impressive panoramic views that are offered.
CHINA
Chinese cities have a great number of skyscrapers. China has experienced rapid economic growth in recent years.
This has caused increasing urbanisation and fuelled the construction of tall buildings.
China has embraced intelligent urban planning and development, resulting in an impressive concentration of skyscrapers in some of its cities.
HONG KONG
Hong Kong has the largest number of skyscrapers. Its high-rise count totals 657 skyscrapers, including six supertall buildings – buildings that are over 300 metres tall.
SHENZEN
The booming Chinese city of Shenzen comes in at second place. Shenzen’s growth as a technology and innovation hub has spurred rapid development.
This growth has led to a construction boom. Owing to a lack of space, many of the city’s new developments are vertical marvels.
NEW YORK
In third place with the most skyscrapers for 2023, is the American city of New York.
New York City has always flaunted a magnificent skyline with many iconic skyscrapers making up its impressive skyline.

SOUTH AFRICA
While no SA cities make the list of the top 25, the country does indeed have some of the tallest buildings on the continent.
Currently, South Africa is home to Africa’s third and fourth-highest buildings.
CARLTON CENTRE
The Carlton Centre, located in downtown Johannesburg held the position of SA’s tallest building for many years.
The 50-storey Carlton Centre located on Commissioner Street in central Johannesburg, is the second-highest building in SA.
At 223 metres high, it is the fourth tallest building in Africa after The Leonardo (also in Johannesburg), the Mohammed VI Tower in Morocco and the Iconic Tower in Egypt.
THE LEONARDO
The Leonardo is a 55-floor mixed-use property located in Sandton. It is SA’s tallest building and also stands as the tallest building in sub-Saharan Africa, it stands at a height of 234 metres.
The building is located at 75 Maude Street, approximately 100 metres from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
