IS THE ‘CURSE OF THE GRIMALDI’S PLAGUING THE ROYAL FAMILY OF MONACO?
Members of the Royal Family of Monaco seem to be unlucky in love and death. Most of them have been married more than once, while others can’t seem to get a grasp on love.
Then there are the tragic deaths, the shocking divorces, and headlining paternity allegations. Could all of this be because of the “Curse of the Grimaldis?”
The Royal Family of Monaco, currently headed by Prince Albert and Princess Charlene, make the headlines more often than not. But could their tumultuous relationship be due to more than just everyday issues?
According to MailOnline, the family’s brush with “bad luck” could potentially date back to 1297. Francesco the Spiteful reportedly tricked the principality’s defenders by disguising himself as a monk, only to kill them.
There are also talks of a myth where a witch put a curse on the family after someone in the Grimaldi family did her wrong.
Here’s a look at the so-called “curse” on the Grimaldis, the Royal Family of Monaco.
PRINCE ALBERT AND PRINCESS CHARLENE: A TUMULTUOUS RELATIONSHIP
Rumuors ran rampant when the fifty-something Prince Charles tied the knot with South African Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock in 2011. The 20-year age gap raised more than a few eyebrows. And their lavish three-day wedding celebrations reportedly cost £53 million (estimated at more than R1.2 billion).
The Princess’s actions before and during the celebrations lefts royal fans gushing, with many believing she was kept there against her will. Even though there have since been many awkward moments captured, the couple welcomed twins Gabriella and Jacques in 2014. According to MailOnline, the prince and princess are seen as the family’s official heirs, despite Albert having two illegitimate children before he dated Charlene.
In 2021 another paternity suit was leveled against Prince Albert. This while Princess Charlene reportedly took a “medical hiatus in South Africa and Switzerland. She spent most of the year away from her family after contracting an ear, nose, and throat infection, Her illness reportedly made it difficult for her to fly, the New York Post reports.
The couple has been spotted together in public more often over the last couple of years, but speculations that Princess Charlene is being paid about £10 million (more than 238 million) a year to fulfill her royal duties, Marie Claire UK reports.
PRINCESS CAROLINE: THREE MISCARRIAGES AND MARRIAGES
The eldest daughter of Princess Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier, Princess Caroline seems to have been struck the hardest by the so-called curse.
In 1978, she married French playboy Philippe Junot, who was 17 years older than her. Two years later, they got a divorce, and she married Stefano Casiraghi, with whom she had three children with Andrea, Pierre, and Charlotte. Stefano, however, tragically died in a speedboat accident when he was only 30 years old, leaving Princess Caroline widowed at a very young age. This is according to MailOnline.
In 1999 she gave love a third shot and married Prince Ernst-August of Hanover. The couple had a daughter, Princess Alexandra, together but separated in 2009. According to the publication, the Princess also suffered three miscarriages throughout her life.
PRINCESS STEPHANIE: UNLUCKY IN LOVE
As a 17-year-old, Princess Stephanie was the only surviving passenger in the car crash that claimed the life of her mother, well-known actress Princess Grace Kelly. As a young girl, tabloids dubbed her the “wild child of the family.” According to reports, she has been linked to A-lister celebs like Rob Lowe and Jean-Claude Van Damme, MailOnline reports.
In 1991, she caused quite a stir when she became involved and later married her former bodyguard, Daniel Ducruet. The couple shared two children out of wedlock, but the marriage later ended in tears after Daniel was involved in a cheating scandal.
In 1998 the Princess welcomed daughter Camille. Although it was initially unknown who her father was, Camille later named her father as a former palace security guard Jean Raymond Gottlieb, in an Instagram post, Express UK reports.
Princess Stephanie later hooked up with an elephant trainer before she married a Portuguese circus acrobat Adans Lopez Peres. Less than a year after, they called it quits.

PRINCESS GRACE KELLY: DIED TOO SOON
She was known as one of the world’s most beautiful women and a Hollywood actress. But Grace Kelly, Prince Albert, Princess Caroline, and Princess Stephanie’s mother, tragically died in 1982 after a car accident.
She first met Prince Rainier of Monaco at the Cannes Film Festival in 1955, and a year later, the couple got married, Town & Country reports.
According to reports, they were as in love as can be, and her family, the country of Monaco, and the entire world mourned her death. Prince Rainier also never remarried and dedicated himself to his royal duties until he died in 2005.
GENERATIONS OF BAD LUCK
But it’s not only the current royal family plagued by the so-called curse.
PRINCESS CHARLOTTE: 10 YEARS OF UNHAPPINESS
Princess Charlotte, Prince Rainier’s mother, reportedly had an unhappy marriage with Count Pierre de Polignac that lasted ten years.
The couple got married in 1920, whereafter they welcomed two children; Princess Antoinette Louise Alberte Suzanne in December 1920 and including Prince Albert II’s father Rainier, born in 1923. But, it soon was revealed that Pierre was homosexual, and the couple split in the mid-1920s before officially getting a divorce in 1930, Hello Monaco reports.
PRINCE LOUIS II: A LOVE CHILD
Princess Charlotte’s father, Louis II, Monaco’s love life was just as filled with drama as his daughter, grandson, and great-grandchildren’s. Princess Charlotte is his illegitimate child with a cabaret singer he met while stationed in Algeria. Later Charlotte was recognised as his heir when he adopted her, and laws were officially changed to allow it, Royal Central reports. In 1949 she renounced her claim to the throne in favour of her son Prince Rainier III.
