The Cape Town faculty have been understandably fast to congratulate their star pupil, writing on social media: “The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has announced that KELLY PROWSE is the joint top learner overall in the 2022 NSC Examinations (Public School). We are so proud of Kelly’s achievement which shows her dedication and commitment towards her academic goals.”

Prowse reportedly shared top spot with Husnaa Haffeje from Al-Falaah College (Independent Schools) in KwaZulu-Natal.
However, Haffejee didn’t seem within the top 3 of the Quintile 5 matriculants – or every other quintile – with Prowse ending forward of second-placed Simone Anna-Mart Louw from Bloemhof Girls’ High School within the Western Cape with one other Western Cape pupil, Kenneth Janson from Hoer Jongenskool Paarl, in third.
In a video tweeted by Inside Education, Prowse mentioned she was shocked and excited by her outcomes.
Prowse additionally took first place in arithmetic within the nation.
The Western Cape was represented by two learners – in first and third place – for maths, whereas Priyasha Naidoo from Westville Girls High took second place.

Like each pupil, Prowse needed to overcome challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic – and cargo shedding – in making ready for her exams.
“In Covid there were definitely sections of different subjects that were neglected, and rightfully so, because you could not get through the whole curriculum, but it meant that from grade 11 and matric, it had to be a lot of work on my own time and a lot of work with the teachers to catch up on those sections that were kind of overlooked. In that part, matric was even busier trying to get on top of everything,” Prowse mentioned.

What next for the nation’s top achiever?
“I’m actually going to be studying actuarial science, probably at UCT, so we’ll see. I’m hoping that I enjoy it, I love my maths, obviously, so I’m sure I will. So, yeah, I’ll see where the wind takes me.”
As reported by The South African web site, the official move price for the category of 2022 was 80.1%, up from 76.4% in 2021.

The Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga mentioned 920 634 learners enrolled to write down the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations in 2022, together with 168 631 part-time candidates.
The class of 2022 was the biggest cohort of matric candidates so far.
