A distinguished British royal aide who resigned from her function at Buckingham Palace after asking a Black British charity director the place she was “really from” has met with the activist to apologize and pledged to study from the incident, in response to a joint announcement launched on Friday.

Lady Susan Hussey, 83, who was a long-standing lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth II and godmother to royal inheritor Prince William, met with Ngozi Fulani, a British activist and chief govt of home abuse charity Sistah Space, on Friday at Buckingham Palace, the place she apologized.

Hussey “pledged to deepen her awareness of the sensitivities involved and is grateful for the opportunity to learn more about the issues in this area,” in response to the assertion, which famous that Fulani had “unfairly received the most appalling torrent of abuse on social media and elsewhere.” Fulani accepted the apology and mentioned “that no malice was intended.”

The controversy arose after an occasion at Buckingham Palace final month, designed to boost consciousness about violence towards girls and women. Fulani, certainly one of about 300 visitors on the occasion, later wrote on Twitter that she had “mixed feelings” concerning the occasion and described an interplay with a girl she named “Lady SH” shortly after she arrived.

The girl had requested a sequence of questions, Fulani mentioned, together with, “What part of Africa are you from?” and “Where do you really come from?”

Mixed emotions about yesterday’s go to to Buckingham Palace. 10 minutes after arriving, a member of employees, Lady SH, approached me, moved my hair to see my identify badge. The dialog under occurred. The remainder of the occasion is a blur.

“I just stood at the edge of the room, smiled [and] engaged briefly with who spoke to me until I could leave,” the activist wrote on Twitter.

Mandu Reid, chief of the Women’s Equality Party and a witness to the interplay, later told The Washington Post it felt like “an interrogation.”

“It was question after question … it wasn’t fleeting, it was several minutes,” she mentioned.

Buckingham Palace introduced the next day that a royal household member had “stepped aside from her honorary role with immediate effect” after an investigation had concluded that “unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments” had been made.

Though she was not named, it quickly grew to become obvious who the royal family member was.

Hussey was a well known royal fixture, having served in an unpaid function since 1960. She was depicted within the new season of “The Crown” on Netflix as a detailed good friend and adviser of the queen — a task she performed in actual life too, incomes the nickname “Number One Head Girl” and the official title “Woman of the Bedchamber,” which successfully meant she was the queen’s right-hand girl.

Her remarks sparked a wave of criticism of the royal family, which has struggled with reports of racism in the past. But some folks took goal at Fulani for publicizing the incident.

Sistah Space, which helps girls of African and Caribbean heritage affected by home abuse and sexual assault, posted an announcement to Instagram final week saying that it needed to “temporarily cease many of our operations to ensure the safety of our service users and our team.”

Fulani’s group and household acquired “some horrific abuse via social media,” she mentioned in an announcement quoted by British media.

After their assembly on Friday, Fulani and Hussey mentioned they might search “peace to rebuild their lives in the wake of an immensely distressing period for them both.”
