SABC CROWN GOSPEL MUSIC AWARDS 2022 TAKES CENTRE STAGE
IN DURBAN
Stakeholders in the gospel music and entertainment industry have found their voices again post
Covid pandemic.
The Crown Gospel Music Awards 2022 organized a show to give such expression took place last
night in Durban, SA.
South Africa has never been in short supply of voices behind the microphone that render songs
of different genres predating Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela of old.
It cannot be less for gospel music, even the SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards 2022 as well.
Usually, entertainment activities are not worth the name without gatherings – marked by
pumping of hands, and body shoves. Take these things away from the gregarious nature of
Africans, and then it will be all flat and bland.
But this show marked a re-entry.
THE RETURN OF THE GOSPEL MUSIC AWARD
Capping the year with the voices of praise, and rewarding the human resources that power the
output of the industry could not have come at a better time.
Excellence has its pay time, and it took the dexterity of the World Gospel Powerhouse (WGP) to
organize this.
The 2022 awards did not come with a lower rating. It went a few notches higher.

To nurture a vibrant gospel music sector, the organizers left no stone unturned. The performing
artists – individuals or groups in various categories were not left out. Songwriters were given
pride of place too.

engineers and producers – had their places.
The Crown Gospel Music Awards spread its net to include intellectual works like videos, DVDs,
and albums which emerged in the period under review.
Categories such as Best of Rap, Worship, Newcomer, Gospel collaboration, Contemporary
gospel, and Traditional gospel hit the award list.
In all, there were 106 nominees in 26 categories presented in the 2022 Gospel Music Awards
announced by the Convener, World Gospel Powerhouse (WGP).
According to Zanele Mbokazi-Mkanbule, president of WGP, it has been two years of small-scale
events at the prestigious Durban International Convention Center, and now the bigger one.
