Pirates Edge Past Sekhukhune to Reach Carling Knockout Semis
Orlando Pirates have booked their place in the Carling Knockout semi-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The defending champions controlled the early stages and created the better chances. Ghampani Lungu went closest when he headed a Deon Hotto cross into the side-netting, while Sekhukhune threatened on the counter through Chibuike Ohizu, who nodded wide from an Ellis Rammala corner.
The breakthrough arrived on the half-hour mark. Tshepang Moremi delivered a curling cross from the left, and Mpho Padime adjusted well to finish into the near post.
It was a significant moment for the young midfielder, who was handed a start by Abdeslam Ouaddou in place of Thalente Mbatha.
Pirates pushed for a second before the break. Simphiwe Masilela’s intelligent movement created a shooting opportunity, but Sekhukhune goalkeeper Manuel Sapunga was equal to it. The visitors, who had sat deep for long periods, were unable to find an equaliser despite occasional breaks.
The second half remained tight as Sekhukhune looked to get back into the contest, but the Buccaneers’ defence, marshalled by Sipho Chaine, held firm to protect the lead.
The 1-0 scoreline proved enough to send the Sea Robbers through as they continue their defence of the Carling Knockout title.
With this result, Pirates maintain their strong record against Babina Noko this season and advance into the last four, where they will continue their bid for another domestic cup success.
