SAPS Nab Suspect with Unlicensed Gun in Khayelitsha Taxi Rank Crackdown
High-density police deployments at local transit hubs yielded swift results on Thursday morning, 29 October 2026, when South African Police Service (SAPS) members arrested an adult male for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The early morning operation was part of an aggressive, targeted rollout aimed at combatting a recent surge in taxi-related shootings and safeguarding commuters, including workers and school children, during peak travel hours.
According to police reports, SAPS members operationalised intelligence regarding a group of taxi drivers gathering at the Site C taxi rank.
As officers approached the group, they noticed one man frantically kicking an object underneath a nearby vehicle.
Police quickly apprehended the individual and conducted a physical search under the vehicle. Officers recovered a 9mm pistol loaded with 15 rounds of live ammunition.
The suspect failed to produce a valid firearm licence and was immediately detained.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court as soon as formal charges are processed.
This arrest comes amidst heightened volatility within Cape Town’s transport sector.
Just a day prior, regional leaders, including Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, publically condemned a bloody spate of shooting incidents linked to taxi disputes across Delft, Gugulethu, Mfuleni, and Khayelitsha.
In response to the violence, law enforcement has flooded volatile transit interchanges.
SAPS management confirmed that heavy crime prevention deployments will remain on the ground indefinitely to suppress further
