Chiefs explain Leaner absence after Zambian ‘scuffle’

Renaldo Leaner is not in the Kaizer Chiefs squad, and with the Confederation Cup decider already under way, social media erupted with speculation.

The goalkeeper’s absence from the matchday squad for the second leg against Red Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium set tongues wagging.

This as it came just days after his on-field row with teammate Reeve Frosler went viral following the 1-0 defeat in Ndola.

Amakhosi moved quickly to shut down the speculation. According to the club, Leaner picked up a knock in training on Thursday and was ruled out of Friday’s game.

“Amakhosi will be without Renaldo Leaner, who sustained an injury during yesterday’s preparations for this crucial fixture,” Chiefs said in a statement.

In his absence, club veteran Bruce Bvuma got the nod between the sticks, with Brandon Petersen on the bench after recovering from injury.

There is good news elsewhere. Influential midfielder Lebohang Maboe is also back among the substitutes.

“Chiefs will be buoyed by the recovery of Brandon Petersen and Lebohang Maboe, whose presence adds depth and options for coach Fernando Da Cruz on the bench,” the club said.

Chiefs need a clean win to overturn the first-leg deficit and book a place in the group stage, and the pressure on Da Cruz is rising with every minute.
