Sundowns confirm Lazola Maku signing

Mamelodi Sundowns have landed a South African youth star, and they see him as the future of their midfield.

They have officially confirmed the signing of Lazola Maku, ending weeks of speculation and handing the African champions a long-term prospect.

The 19-year-old midfielder was on the books of Siwelele FC last season, but parted ways when his contract expired at the end of the campaign.

Before committing to the Brazilians, Maku went on trial at several Austrian clubs, a clear sign that his talent has caught attention well beyond South Africa.

Maku now faces a tough battle for minutes in Miguel Cardoso’s squad. Sundowns have already lifted the MTN8 and the FIFA African-Asian Pacific Cup this season, so the bar is high. The teenager will need to earn his place the hard way.

Maku wore the armband for South Africa’s Under-20 side at the recent COSAFA Cup in Mozambique, where Amajita lifted the trophy under coach Raymond Mdaka. He was also part of the squad that won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Maku came through the ranks at Ubuntu Academy before joining SuperSport United. His rise has been steady, and now comes the biggest test yet.

The club took to X on Tuesday morning with a message that said it all: “Mamelodi Sundowns are pleased to announce the signing of Lazola Maku! Yellow Nation, let’s give the youngster a proper welcome.”
