Ethiopian Nationals in Durban Court for Attempted Murder Following CBD Riot
Tensions remain high in the Durban Central Business District after three Ethiopian nationals appeared in court today, facing charges of attempted murder following a brutal assault that sparked widespread civil unrest.
The suspects made their first appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today.
According to police reports, the men severely assaulted a South African citizen earlier this week.
The victim sustained critical injuries and remains hospitalised.
While the motive behind the initial altercation is still under investigation, news of the assault quickly spread through the local community, igniting a wave of anger.
Mob justice and retaliatory protests erupted shortly after, bringing parts of the Durban CBD to a standstill.
During the chaos, angry crowds targeted businesses and set several vehicles alight along busy city streets.
Law enforcement agencies, including the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Metro Police, were deployed in large numbers to disperse the crowds and restore order.
The court has postponed the matter to allow for further investigations and formal bail applications.
Police have maintained a strong presence in the CBD to prevent any further flare-ups of violence.
Authorities have urged residents not to take the law into their own hands and to let the judicial process run its course.
