Mike Nkuna’s Malamulele City Mall Project Gets Underway
Construction of the long-awaited Malamulele City Mall officially began on Friday with a sod-turning ceremony in Malamulele, Limpopo.
The double-storey development is being undertaken by the Masingita Group of Companies, led by Dr Mike Nkuna. The project is expected to transform Malamulele into a major shopping, business and entertainment destination serving the Collins Chabane Local Municipality and surrounding communities in the Vhembe District.
The planned complex will include a five-star hotel, conference facilities, retail shops, an entertainment area, a new park and an upgraded Malamulele Taxi Rank. The mall component is expected to cover approximately 22,000 square metres, with the development scheduled to open in August 2027.
The sod-turning ceremony was attended by provincial and local leaders, including Limpopo MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Basikopo Makamu, Collins Chabane Local Municipality Mayor Councillor Shadrack Maluleke and Vhembe District Executive Mayor Councillor Miyelani Chauke.
The project is expected to create jobs during construction and after the mall opens, while providing opportunities for local businesses. It is also intended to improve market access for smallholder farmers by strengthening links between agricultural producers and retailers.
Speaking at the ceremony, Maluleke described the occasion as historic, saying a long-held vision for the area was finally becoming a reality.
Nkuna, a prominent developer of township and rural shopping centres across South Africa, said the development would help position Malamulele for further growth by creating employment, attracting visitors and showcasing the local community.
