Pirates take giant step as Chiefs stumble in CAF race

Orlando Pirates are one step closer to the CAF Champions League group stages, but Kaizer Chiefs have work to do after suffering a setback in the CAF Confederation Cup qualifiers.

The Buccaneers claimed a crucial 1-0 away victory over Namibian champions African Stars at the Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone on Saturday afternoon.

Tshepang Moremi was the difference-maker, striking in the 75th minute to hand Pirates a valuable advantage ahead of the return leg. The Soweto giants held firm despite late pressure from Stars to secure the win.

It was a different story for Chiefs in Zambia, where Red Arrows struck late to claim a vital 1-0 home victory, and keep their hopes of reaching the Confederation Cup group stages alive.

Alassane Diarra scored the decisive goal at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, leaving Amakhosi facing a must-win battle in the second leg.

Both return fixtures are scheduled for Friday, October 23. Pirates will welcome African Stars to Orlando Amstel Arena, knowing a positive result will secure their passage to the group stages.

Chiefs, meanwhile, will have home advantage at FNB Stadium as they attempt to overturn their deficit and keep their continental campaign alive.

One Soweto giant is closing in on qualification. The other has its back against the wall.
