KATLEHONG – The Afrika Mayibuye Movement has condemned the fatal shooting that occurred following a memorial service in Katlehong on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, extending condolences to the bereaved families and wishing those injured a speedy recovery.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the movement called on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to conduct a thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice.

The organisation also rejected claims that the alleged perpetrator was one of its councillor candidates, insisting that none of its candidates had been implicated in wrongdoing in the incident.

Mayibuye’s Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate, Themba Nzimande, visited the scene and is expected to visit the affected families to convey the organisation’s condolences.

The movement’s Ekurhuleni leadership is conducting an internal investigation to establish what happened and determine whether the individual involved is a member of the organisation.

Mayibuye warned that if the investigation confirms the individual is a member, his membership will be terminated immediately.

The organisation condemned the reckless handling and discharge of firearms at memorial services, funerals and celebrations, warning that firing guns into the air endangers lives and cannot be justified under any circumstances.

It further urged community members to remain calm, avoid retaliation and provide police with any credible information that could assist the investigation.

The movement said the victims and their families deserved justice, while communities should be able to gather and mourn without fear for their livelihood.
