Seroka murder case postponed to October 20 for bail application

MOUTSE: Three suspects arrested in connection with the murder of former Groblersdal Police Station commander Colonel Lebyane Jeffrey Seroka are expected to return to the Moutse Magistrates’ Court on October 20 for a formal bail application.

The three suspects, two women aged 51 and 41, and a 56-year-old man, appeared in court on Monday, October 12, following their arrest by the Hawks in the Nkoana area of Limpopo’s Sekhukhune District on October 9.

The suspects face charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, vehicle hijacking, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. They have not been convicted, and the allegations will be tested in court.

Seroka, 57, was shot dead outside his home in Maganagobuswa Village, within the Dennilton policing area, in the early hours of October 17, 2020.

He was reportedly preparing to leave for a funeral when he was attacked at his gate at approximately 04:30. The assailants allegedly fled with his white Toyota Hilux, which was later found abandoned along the Dennilton-Maklerekeng road.

At the time of his death, Seroka was serving as the station commander of Groblersdal Police Station. He had joined the South African Police Service in 1987 and served in various capacities, including as a station commander at several police stations.

His killing prompted an outpouring of tributes from senior police officials and government representatives, who described him as a dedicated officer who had served the country for decades.

The case remained unresolved for years as investigators pursued leads to identify those responsible for the killing.

The recent arrests by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation teams in Polokwane and at head office mark a significant development in the six-year-old investigation.

Limpopo Hawks provincial head Major General Gopz Govender has reiterated the investigators’ commitment to following credible leads and bringing those implicated before the courts.

The investigation continues, with the possibility of further arrests as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding Seroka’s murder.
