Da Cruz demands Chiefs response as winless run raises alarm
Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz has made his priority crystal clear — end the winless run and close the gap on the Betway Premiership’s top three.
Amakhosi return to league action against Stellenbosch FC at FNB Stadium on Tuesday night, desperate for a victory after going two league matches without winning.
Chiefs have managed just one win in their last five matches, with draws against Polokwane City and Golden Arrows leaving them fourth on the log with 13 points from seven games.
Da Cruz believes the biggest problem has been their failure to convert their chances.
“After the seventh game, I am happy with the quality of the football that we play,” Da Cruz told the media on Monday. “We played very good football. But we have a lack of efficiency inside the box to score more goals.
“The points that we have lost are because of this lack of efficiency inside the box; we don’t score more goals, so we will work on that. But we play good football, and we must keep it this way.”
Chiefs face a tough opponent in Stellenbosch, who have dominated this fixture in recent meetings. Stellies are unbeaten against Amakhosi in their last three encounters and have won the last two.
But Da Cruz insists past results will count for little when the teams meet again.
The Chiefs coach must also manage a demanding period ahead, with the club set to begin their CAF Confederation Cup campaign later this week against Zambia’s Red Arrows.
For now, however, the focus is firmly on Stellenbosch.
Chiefs will have to do without several key players because of injuries, including Lebohang Maboe, Brandon Petersen, Siphesihle Ndlovu and Adolf Mutasingwa.
Three points could be crucial for Amakhosi as they look to reignite their league campaign.
