Hunt shares major frustration ahead of Chiefs showdown
Gavin Hunt has admitted Stellenbosch FC are battling a major injury crisis ahead of their Betway Premiership clash against Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday night.
The Maroons travel to FNB Stadium for their first competitive match in nearly a month, but Hunt says an extended FIFA international break has done little to improve his preparations.
Stellenbosch last played on September 19, when they beat Kruger United 1-0. They now face an unbeaten Chiefs side after three weeks without competitive football.
Hunt is particularly concerned about the number of players sidelined through injury, including Mosa Lebusa, Surprise Nhlabathi and Orlando Mbembe.
The experienced coach admits the lengthy break has made it difficult to keep his squad motivated and maintain their rhythm.
“It’s been a longer FIFA break than we normally have, so I think everyone is ready to play and ready to go but it was a bit of a hindrance,” Hunt admitted.
“I think the whole world will feel that way because three weeks is a long time, and it’s very difficult to keep training for that amount of time and to stay motivated.
“Unfortunately, we weren’t really able to make the most of it either because we have so many players out – and that’s not to make excuses – but it’s been tough with so many out injured.”
Despite the setbacks, Hunt remains determined to put a competitive team on the pitch against his former employers.
The Stellenbosch coach knows the encounter will attract plenty of attention, with Chiefs returning to action in front of their home supporters.
“It’s always a game that people are excited to play in,” he added.
“We’re looking forward to it and hoping there will be a nice crowd, which I am sure there will be.
“It’s another away game, it’s now six out of eight for us so far [including the home fixture played in Durban], but we have to face it, confront it and get the best possible team out there from what we have available.”
Hunt insists his priority is ensuring that the players selected are fit enough to handle the challenge.
With several key players unavailable, Stellenbosch face a difficult task against an Amakhosi side looking to extend their unbeaten start to the league season.
“The most important thing for us is to get a team out there that is fit to play,” Hunt said.
“Our injury list is huge, and that detracts a little bit, but we will be competitive and that’s the most important thing.”
Kick-off is at 7.30 pm at FNB Stadium on Tuesday.
