One Dead, Another Injured in Farm Hostage Situation Before Suspect Commits Suicide
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Amersfoort has launched an intensive investigation into a horrific hostage situation that unfolded on a local farm in the Gert Sibande District on Saturday, 10 October 2026.
The incident left one victim dead, another seriously injured, and concluded with the armed suspect turning the gun on himself.
Authorities have officially opened dockets for murder, attempted murder, and kidnapping.
According to official police reports, the crisis began in the early hours of Saturday morning. SAPS members were dispatched to the scene at approximately 06:00 after receiving emergency calls regarding an ongoing hostage situation on the farm.
Upon arrival, first responders were met by three traumatised victims who had successfully managed to escape the ordeal. The victims revealed that a 55-year-old suspect, armed with a handgun, had taken them hostage.
During the captivity, the suspect allegedly shot a 50-year-old victim, who died from their injuries at the scene.
He then opened fire on a second victim, aged approximately 53, leaving him for dead.
The 53-year-old survived the attack and was urgently airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment for severe injuries.
Following the shootings, the suspect retreated and barricaded himself inside his house on the same farm property.
SAPS mobilized specialized tactical resources and a team of hostage negotiators to the scene. During the negotiation process, the suspect shot himself and was certified dead at the scene.
While police confirm they know the identity of the deceased 55-year-old suspect, the name is being withheld until all formal identification and administrative processes are completed.
Forensic teams recovered a 9mm pistol at the scene.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, expressed concern over the violent incident, reiterating the dangers of firearm misuse.
“Firearms, when mishandled or used unlawfully, contribute to violent crime and the loss of lives,” Lieutenant General Modise stated.
Modise reminded communities regarding firearm compliance:
“We urge members of the public to work with authorities and report any person in possession of a firearm, even if the person is licenced to possess such firearm, but his or her behaviour is not in line with the Firearms Control Act of South Africa. Such conduct should be reported immediately to authorities before another life is lost.”
The SAPS investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy remains ongoing.
