Assen SAPS Officers Help Woman In Labour Deliver Healthy Baby Girl At Police Station
South African Police Service (SAPS) officers at Assen police station in the North West helped a woman in custody deliver a healthy baby girl after she went into labour on Thursday, 8 October 2026.
According to SAPS, officers under the command of Sergeant Chidi responded to a report of a woman’s arrest at Msholozi informal settlement in Kameeldrift. Constables Olivier and Mokhutshoane arrested the woman and took her to the station.
The woman reportedly showed no visible injuries and appeared to be in good health when officers arrested her. However, she began experiencing labour pains after arriving at the station.
An ambulance was called immediately. While waiting for emergency medical services to arrive, officers assisted with the delivery under the guidance of 80-year-old local resident Marijke Van der Walt (pictures), who was present at the station.
At approximately 16:15, the woman gave birth to a healthy baby girl inside the station’s Community Service Centre.
The ambulance arrived shortly afterwards and transported the mother and newborn to a medical facility for further assessment and care.
North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams commended the officers for their swift response, professionalism and compassion.
He said the incident demonstrated the SAPS’s commitment to protecting and serving the community, particularly people in vulnerable circumstances.
Police have not released further details about the reason for the woman’s arrest or the identities of the mother and her baby.
