‘I wanted to enjoy football again’: Foster explains shock move to America
Bafana Bafana striker Lyle Foster has revealed the personal reason behind his decision to leave European football for a fresh start in Major League Soccer (MLS).
After years of playing in Europe, the 26-year-old has joined Houston Dynamo FC on loan from Burnley.
He has admitted that he he wanted a change of environment to help hima rediscover his enjoyment of the game.
Foster began his European journey in January 2019 when he joined AS Monaco from Orlando Pirates. He later played for Cercle Brugge, Vitória Guimarães, Westerlo and Burnley.
But his new chapter is unfolding in the United States, where his experience around the 2026 FIFA World Cup helped convince him to make the move.
“After the World Cup, being in America for some time, I kind of enjoyed the vibe here. I like the people and, more than anything, I just wanted a change of scenery, a place to enjoy football again,” Foster told Houston Dynamo’s media team.
Interestingly, the opportunity came at the last minute.
“The last two days of the transfer window, my agent said Houston might be interested; I said let’s go,” he revealed.
Foster believes he can help Houston challenge for honours, saying he wants to be the missing piece in the team’s puzzle.
“I believe that I can just be a piece of the puzzle that fits into the team,” he added.
