Chiefs sweat over Baartman injury ahead of Stellenbosch clash

Kaizer Chiefs are keeping a close eye on Luke Baartman’s fitness as they prepare to return to competitive action against Stellenbosch FC at FNB Stadium next Tuesday.

Amakhosi have been without a competitive fixture for three weeks due to the FIFA international break. But their preparations for the Betway Premiership clash have been overshadowed by concerns over Baartman.

The young attacker picked up an injury on national team duty with SA Under 23 squad, and is now being closely monitored by the club’s medical team. Chiefs are expected to provide an update on his condition ahead of the encounter.

Baartman has been an important part of coach Fernando Da Cruz’s plans this season, making his availability a key talking point as Chiefs prepare for their eighth league match.

There is some positive news, however, with three players returning from South African Under 23 duty, boosting the squad ahead of the Stellenbosch test.

Chiefs go into the match sitting fourth on the Betway Premiership table with 13 points from seven games, while Gavin Hunt’s Stellenbosch are seventh on nine points.

The Glamour Boys will be hoping Baartman recovers in time as they look to make a strong return in front of their home supporters.

Kick-off is at 7.30pm at FNB Stadium, with tickets available for R80 through the MyTicket app, Shoprite and Checkers outlets nationwide.
