MOGALAKWENA MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEE ARRESTED IN R45M TENDER CORRUPTION CASE
LIMPOPO: The Hawks have arrested an additional suspect in connection with an alleged R45 million tender corruption and money-laundering investigation involving Mogalakwena Local Municipality.
The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation (SCI) units from Phalaborwa and Polokwane, together with the Hawks Task Team, arrested the 43-year-old municipal employee and a juristic company on Wednesday, 7 October 2026.
According to the Hawks, the arrests follow a complaint involving alleged fraud, corruption and money laundering linked to a R45 million municipal tender.
Investigators allege that in December 2022, the municipal employee irregularly awarded a R45 million tender to Flitmove (Pty) Ltd without following the required Supply Chain Management processes and procedures.
The Hawks said payments were made from January 2023, while services only commenced between April and May 2023 after the municipality’s Legal Division allegedly threatened to cancel the contract.
An intensive investigation by the SCI allegedly uncovered a scheme in which kickbacks were channelled to an account linked to the municipal employee through a company in which he is allegedly the sole director.
The Hawks said an operation was conducted in Pretoria on 15 September 2026 to arrest the suspect, but he allegedly evaded arrest.
His whereabouts were subsequently established, leading to his arrest on Wednesday.
The suspect and the company have been detained at a police station and are expected to appear before the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 9 October 2026.
The Hawks said Phase One of the investigation has been completed, with further arrests expected as the investigation continues.
Limpopo Hawks Provincial Head, Major General (Adv) Gopz Govender, praised the investigation team for what he described as excellent investigative work.
Govender said the Hawks would continue working to dismantle corruption within municipalities, which he said deprives communities of effective service delivery and proper infrastructure.
The accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
