Durban Brothel Operators Jailed: Kingpin Gets Life for Human Trafficking and Rape

In a significant victory against human trafficking, the Pinetown Regional Court has sentenced 40-year-old Ifeanacho Ifeanyi to life imprisonment, while his co-accused, Mapule Tshibangila (35), was handed a 15-year prison sentence.

The sentences, handed down on Friday, follow a meticulous investigation by the Hawks’ Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit.

The case began on 5 September 2022, when Hawks members from the Economic Protected Resources (EPR) section acted on a tip-off regarding suspicious activities at a property on Hopewell Street in Malvern.

Working alongside the Durban Metro Police and Malvern SAPS, officials raided the premises and discovered it was operating as an illegal brothel.

Six occupants were found inside, including a female victim who was immediately rescued and taken to a hospital for medical examination.

A thorough investigation revealed a harrowing ordeal of exploitation. Tshibangila had lured the victim from Johannesburg to Durban under the false pretence of a legitimate employment opportunity.

Instead, the victim was held captive against her will, repeatedly assaulted, raped, and forced into prostitution.

The Hawks also established that the broader premises were being systematically used for sex work and illegal earnings.

The duo’s bail applications were successfully opposed, and they remained in custody throughout their trial until their conviction on 19 August 2026.

The court handed down heavy sentences to reflect the severity of the crimes, ordered to run concurrently, Ifeanyi was sentenced to life for trafficking in persons, life for rape, 3 years for kidnapping, 5 years for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), 3 years for keeping a brothel, 7 years for procurement, 3 years for permitting the defilement of a female on his premises, 5 years for living off the earnings of prostitution, 5 years for money laundering, and 12 months for violating the Immigration Act.

Mapule Tshibangila was sentenced to 15 years for trafficking in persons, 13 years for rape, 3 years for kidnapping, and 3 years for keeping a brothel.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Head of the Hawks, Brigadier Zenobia Mulligan, welcomed the harsh sentences and commended the collaborative efforts of the investigative teams.
