Sibiya’s son says family did not authorisecontact with complainant

Defence affidavit distances family from a third party’s approach.

Shadrack Sibiya’s son has told the Randburg Magistrate’s Court that a family friend contacted a
complainant without the family’s knowledge or instruction, according to The Citizen’s report of the
bail proceedings.

The account was contained in an affidavit read in court on 1 October 2026. It addressed contact
attributed to a man identified in reporting as Maumela.

The affidavit provides the family’s response to an issue raised during the State’s opposition to bail:
whether contact with people connected to the case amounted to interference or intimidation.

The son’s account should be distinguished from a court finding. It sets out the defence-side
explanation for the contact; it does not by itself resolve the prosecution’s concerns

EWN separately reported that a recorded conversation involving Maumela and the minor
complainant’s father was played in court.

Sibiya is seeking bail while facing charges including rape, trafficking in persons and sexual
grooming. He denies the allegations and remains presumed innocent.
