Mathebula backs Chiefs youngsters to challenge for Engen Champ of Champs title

Kaizer Chiefs Under-19 head coach David Mathebula believes his young side has what it takes to compete for the Engen Champ of Champs title.

Amakhosi booked their place in the prestigious tournament after winning the Gauteng Engen Knockout Challenge in July, earning the right to represent the province against some of the country’s top youth teams.

The tournament will be held at the University of Pretoria’s High-Performance Centre from 2 to 4 October, under the slogan “Where Diski Legends Start”.

With the competition approaching, Mathebula says excitement is growing among his players, who have already started discussing the tournament during training.

“We are ready and we’re happy that we’re playing in the national competition,” Mathebula said.

He expects a strong challenge from teams representing other provinces but sees the tournament as an opportunity for his players to test themselves against the best.

“It’s all about testing ourselves against the best in the other provinces. But yeah, we are ready, the boys are ready.”

Mathebula insists Chiefs are not going to Pretoria simply to participate.

“We want to go as far as the final. They are playing to win. We want to win the Champ of Champs.”
