Mosimane confirms major Bafana blow ahead of Eritrea clash

Mosimane confirms major Bafana blow ahead of Eritrea clash

Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has confirmed that Aubrey Modiba and Teboho Mokoena will miss Wednesday’s AFCON qualifier against Eritrea.

Both players have been ruled out after scans confirmed they are carrying injuries.

Mosimane revealed that Mokoena was already struggling towards the end of Bafana’s 2-1 victory over Guinea.

“Mokoena was pulling that leg with a few minutes to go, and he gave us everything to finish the game,” said Mosimane.

The Bafana coach confirmed that neither player has trained since the squad arrived in Egypt.

“Aubrey is not available; Teboho is not available. They haven’t trained since we came.

“The doctor took them for scans, and the scans, in a nutshell, showed that they are injured, and we can’t use them.”

The injuries leave Mosimane with two key decisions to make ahead of the second qualifier.

Samukele Kabini, who scored the winner against Guinea, is expected to replace Modiba at left-back.

In midfield, Bathusi Aubaas could partner Sphephelo Sithole, with Relebohile Mofokeng operating further forward.

Mosimane admitted the absences are a setback but said he has no choice but to work with the players available.

“Who would not use the players who have helped us to be where we are at this point in time? Unfortunately, they will not be available.”

Modiba and Mokoena remain with the squad while receiving treatment, but their return remains uncertain.

“I don’t know if they’ll make the next match, but according to the doctors, the chances are very minimal that they can make it against Egypt. But this one, definitely, they will miss.”

Bafana face Eritrea at Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo on Wednesday, with kick-off scheduled for 6pm South African time.

After that, they play The Pharoah’s in a friendly match on Sunday before they return home.
