eThekwini manager hits back at claims over Moses Mabhida MTN8 final
eThekwini city manager Musa Mbhele has dismissed claims that the city uses questionable tactics to secure major PSL finals for Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The iconic Durban venue was officially confirmed on Monday night as the host of the MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns on October 10.
Speaking at an event at the stadium on Tuesday morning, Mbhele rejected suggestions that the city “oils certain palms” to attract the PSL’s biggest matches.
“We are not — and I may sound arrogant, but it is the only way I can express it — so desperate to boost tourism that we would resort to unethical actions like that.”
Mbhele said Durban’s reputation as a major tourism destination means the city does not need to resort to such measures.
“We are one of the biggest tourist destinations in the country, and people love Durban,” he said.
He added that hosting a major event such as the MTN8 final would further strengthen Durban’s brand and attract more visitors.
“Having a major event like the one on 10 October adds momentum and encourages people to visit,” he said.
Mbhele also insisted that eThekwini does not pay to host major football matches.
“We do not pay to host these matches. People choose Durban because of the electric atmosphere here.”
He believes Durban remains an attractive destination for major sporting events because of its accommodation capacity, beaches and strong tourism appeal.
“We are the destination of choice, and MTN knows their brand will thrive when marketing here.”
