Teko Modise explains why AmaZulu are flying — and what they are doing differently to KZN teams
Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teko Modise has hailed AmaZulu FC’s impressive start to the season, saying Usuthu are doing something that many Durban clubs have struggled to achieve.
AmaZulu have lost just one of their opening seven matches and currently sit inside the top three of the league standings.
Their attack has also been firing, with striker Thandelwenkosi Ngwenya leading the PSL scoring charts with eight goals and one assist in seven appearances.
Speaking to Hollywoodbets Sports Blog, Modise praised AmaZulu for their approach and their ability to revive players who struggled at other clubs.
“AmaZulu have done what most teams, especially those from Durban, have failed to do before,” Modise said.
He believes the club’s decision to trust coach Arthur Zwane is also beginning to pay dividends.
“With a coach such as Arthur Zwane, who has a distinctive style of play and also worked with the youth structures at Kaizer Chiefs, he understands the importance of bringing through youngsters.”
Modise says AmaZulu’s focus on the future could help them compete consistently at the top.
“With AmaZulu trusting him, the results are now coming through,” he says.
The former Bafana Bafana star believes Usuthu could also return to continental football if they maintain their current form.
Their last CAF appearance came in the 2021/22 season, when they finished second in the league under Benni McCarthy and qualified for the CAF Champions League.
Modise believes another continental campaign could give the players valuable experience and help AmaZulu develop the mentality needed to challenge South Africa’s established big clubs.
