11 dead, eight critically injured in N2 taxi-truck crash near St Lucia, KZN
Eleven people were killed and eight others critically injured when a minibus taxi collided head-on with a truck on the N2 near Mtubatuba in northern KwaZulu-Natal early on Sunday.
The crash happened at about 4am near Nkwiliza Bridge in the Inkosi Mtubatuba Local Municipality.
The taxi was travelling northbound while the truck was travelling southbound when they collided. The taxi caught fire, leaving eight people critically injured with burn wounds.
The occupants are believed to have been returning from a Maskandi festival in eMpangeni.
Both directions of the N2 were closed as emergency services attended to the scene and authorities worked to clear the wreckage.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma expressed condolences to the families of those who died.
The cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed, and investigations are under way.
