Queen Masalanabo Modjadji VII calls for preservation of Balobedu heritage
LIMPOPO — Her Majesty Queen Masalanabo Modjadji VII has called on the Balobedu nation and South Africans to preserve their cultural heritage while ensuring that traditional values remain relevant to future generations.
In her Heritage Day message, the Queen reflected on the rich history of the Balobedu nation and the enduring legacy of the Rain Queens, describing the dynasty as a symbol of women’s leadership, wisdom and cultural stewardship passed down through generations.
The Queen said heritage should not only be viewed as an inheritance from previous generations, but also as a responsibility to communities and future generations.
“Heritage is both an inheritance and a responsibility,” the message states, calling on communities to honour those who came before them while preserving their culture for generations to come.
The Queen highlighted language, stories, traditions and everyday values as important elements of cultural identity.
She also recognised the role of elders in passing knowledge to younger generations, saying young people have a responsibility to embrace their identity and ensure that Balobedu culture remains alive and meaningful in a changing society.
Under her leadership, the Queen said the continuity of the Rain Queen legacy should be celebrated while creating space for the aspirations of a new generation.
The message further called for greater commitment to the dignity, safety and wellbeing of women and children.
The Queen said the colour white, used as a symbol in the Heritage Day message, represents peace, purity and purpose and should serve as a reminder of the need to build communities where women and children are protected, valued and able to thrive.
She urged the Balobedu nation and South Africans to use Heritage Day to strengthen unity and respect for different cultures.
“May this Heritage Day strengthen our unity, deepen our respect for one another’s cultures, and inspire us to carry our heritage forward with pride and responsibility,” the message reads.
The Queen concluded her message with a call for future generations to remain connected to their roots while confidently shaping their future.
“Rooted in tradition. Guided by purpose. Carrying our heritage forward.”
