Reiger Park murder accused allegedly found with cellphone in custody for second time
BOKSBURG – A fresh allegation has emerged in the Reiger Park murder case after the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court heard that accused number one, Reagan Cheslin Collis, was allegedly found in possession of a cellphone while behind bars for a second time.
Prosecutor Leswikane Mashabela told the court on Wednesday that the State had received correspondence from Boksburg Correctional Services concerning Collis’ alleged conduct while in custody.
Mashabela said Correctional Services had informed prosecutors that another cellphone had allegedly been found in Collis’ possession.
The allegation marks the second time Collis has been accused of having an unauthorised cellphone while detained.
He previously denied an earlier allegation that a cellphone had been found in his possession.
Correctional Services raises security concern
The court heard that Correctional Services considers the unauthorised possession of a cellphone by an inmate a security risk.
Mashabela said the latest allegation could lead to a further risk assessment of Collis and possible disciplinary action within the correctional facility.
He told the court that he had only recently received the information but believed both the court and the accused needed to be made aware of it.
Defence objects
Collis’ attorney, Samkele Kuzani, objected to the fresh allegation being considered as part of the court’s bail determination.
Kuzani argued that the information concerned his client’s character and had not formed part of the evidence originally placed before the court during the bail application.
The defence argued that the allegation was premature and should not influence the court’s decision on bail.
Mashabela maintained that the matter had been raised because the information originated from the correctional facility and could result in further measures being taken against Collis.
Second cellphone allegation
The fresh allegation follows evidence previously placed before the court that Collis had allegedly been found with a cellphone while detained.
During earlier bail proceedings, the investigating officer confirmed that authorities had received information concerning an alleged cellphone in Collis’ possession.
The State has argued during the bail proceedings that Collis could pose a risk to the administration of justice if released.
Collis has disputed allegations made against him and has denied the earlier cellphone claim.
Four accused remain in custody
Collis, 23, is appearing alongside Jamal Meyer, 24, Elvino Levert Crafford, 27, and Mcfoolen Ford, 26.
The four accused face eight counts of murder, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and charges under the Firearms Control Act arising from the deadly Reiger Park shooting on 7 August.
Gauteng Anti-Gang Unit officers Constable Thapelo Tlomatsana, 29, and Constable Sphiwe Sibeko, 28, as well as civilians Roleen Lessing and Jaydin Margerman, were killed in the shooting.
The accused have disputed the State’s case against them.
Their bail judgment, which had been expected on Wednesday, was postponed to 6 October 2026.
All four accused will remain behind bars pending the judgment.
Ford remains detained at Modderbee Correctional Centre, while Collis, Meyer and Crafford remain at Boksburg Correctional Services.
The allegations against the accused have not been proven in court, and they remain presumed innocent unless convicted.
