Media Statement TSHWANE DISTRICT – On Thursday, 19 December 2024, the South African Police Service in Tshwane successfully conducted Operation Shanela in the Mabopane and Loate policing precincts. Under the leadership of Major-General Samuel Thine, District Commissioner of Tshwane, this operation adopted a multi-stakeholder approach, resulting in the apprehension of 369 individuals for various offenses. The operation focused on key priorities, including the removal of unlicensed firearms, apprehension of wanted suspects, and enforcement of liquor license compliance. During the start of the operation, Tshwane Detectives apprehended 298 individuals for serious offenses, including, 117 arrests for gender-based violence, and three for murder, one arrest for attempted murder, 13 arrests for common robbery, and two arrests for rape. A total of 61 undocumented individuals were detained and are awaiting legal processes for deportation. Three suspects were arrested for possession and dealing in drugs, with 203 zip lock bags containing Dagga. During this operation, 758 persons and 371 vehicles were searched with 10 vehicles being tested to verify whether they were stolen. 99 AARTO infringement notices were issued by traffic officials, totalling R50 450. Further, 27 premises with five businesses and 12 liquor establishments were inspected, which led to the closure of 6 and the confiscation of 323 817ml of liquor and a gambling machine confiscated for non-compliance with the Liquor Act. Another person was arrested for possession and dealing in illicit cigarettes when 600 cartons of illegal cigarettes, with a street value of R60 000 were found in his possession.
